In November, we installed the CompView Medical NuBOOM into an existing older vintage OR here at OHSU. CompView Medical Staff and OHSU clinical and facilities staff as well as contracted staff conferred with each other around the installation process and the needed preparations prior to the weekend of installation. One of our goals was to avoid having to close an OR during the normal business week. This was accomplished. The installation took essentially 5 hours and the rest of the weekend for testing. Terminal room cleaning occurred before Monday AM when staff training occurred. Once staff training occurred, we were instantly able to use the room for cases that same day. NuBOOM transformed this existing OR.

The comments and feedback were welcomed and started immediately from nursing and medical staff. The room was transformed by having fewer cords and cables on the floor, a key safety issue, improved access to images in an ergonomically sound way, one central control and as one physician said, 'NuBOOM turned this Model-T Ford into a Rolls Royce overnight'! The nursing staff said it has made their life easier in the room. They were able to de-clutter their work spaces, making it easier to move around and get to what they need faster. They no longer have to move a big tower around; a big staff satisfier.

An additional benefit from the physician's perspective is less fatigue due to the improved ergonomic positioning of the monitors. They are better able to do long cases without feeling the muscle fatigue from craning their necks to get at the images on the old towers. They actually said they could probably do one more case per day easily just based on how much better they feel operating in the OR with the NuBOOM.

The NuBOOM is a fantastic alternative to expensive OR downtime while providing state of the art integration in a floor mounted boom system. Our infrastructure would not support ceiling mounted booms and our OR is too busy for lengthy downtime retrofitting and installation. The NuBOOM installation took place over the weekend and we were back up and running at 7:30am Monday morning. The NuBOOM offers excellent video capability and fantastic resolution, gets everything off the floor, and offers the flexibility to accommodate any view for the surgeon and assistants.
